As a member of the Detroit Entertainment Commission, Detroit electronic music pioneer Carl Craig has helped pushed through a resolution to have a plaque honoring the late James “J. Dilla” Yancey to stand in Conant Gardens, the Northern Detroit neighborhood that is home to the legendary musician and his family. “We passed an agreement that we would do a plaque for J. Dilla in Conant Gardens,” Craig stated yesterday during the annual Movement Festival at Hart Plaza. “We had Ma Dukes come and talk to the commission after we agreed to it already. The next step is the Detroit City Council has to agree to it.”
The idea behind the plaque stems from the proposed “Walk Of Fame” that has long been in discussion to honor artists/musicians in Detroit, similar to what exists in Hollywood. Craig adds, “The plaque would maybe be even more like what you have in London. There is a plaque on the side of a building that says that Jimi Hendrix lived here. There’s these reference points that I have from being able to travel to do my job and I’m happy to bring these experiences and these things that I’ve seen and try to implement them into Detroit.”

I love this. Got my full support. To bad I’m not on the City Council, I’d back this in a heartbeat. Good on ya Carl Craig.
