Lets face it. There is not too many emcees in the game today that shake things up with the buzz that manifests for them. In the 80s and 90s, we had countless artists from the inner cities of America bringing us tales of their neighborhood’s everyday struggle. These days, there is one emcee that has found his name spoken from the mouths of the who’s who of hip-hop’s elite and he is the New Orleans born Jay Electronica. While Jay Electronica is from the south, he has made pretty much a second home for himself here in Detroit working regularly with the likes of Denaun Porter, Mike Chav, Guilty Simpson, and getting a very enthusiastic co-sign from J. Dilla before he passed.

On Saturday, June 26th, Jay Electronica will headline a show at Saint Andrews Hall in Detroit as a part the Hip Hop Congress National Conference. The show will also feature champions of Detroit hip-hop such as Slum Village, Guilty Simpson, 5 ELA, OneBeLo with live band YIN, Ro Spit and DJ House Shoes, and hosted by Miz Korona. Tickets for the concert ($15) are on sale now via TicketMaster.com and all TicketMaster locations, as well as the St. Andrewʼs Hall box office. This is a 18+ event.

The Hip Hop Congress will host its 9th Annual National Conference sponsored by the Office
of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs of University of Michigan from June 26-28, 2010 in Detroit. Activities will include concerts featuring renowned Hip Hop artists as well as workshops, panels and discussion on prominent issues related to Hip Hop activism and social justice. For more information and registration, visit www.hiphopcongress.com and www.hhcmidest.com

::::CONTEST::::
That’s not it though. We have a couple pairs of tickets to give away this week. There are two ways to win. Here’s the details:

The day has finally arrived. Welcome to the launch of The Loop Detroit. I would not say this is just a new site, but more of a transformation of my previous site Renaissance Soul Detroit (www.rensoul.com). The name of this new site comes from the name of my Detroit hip-hop column from 2003-2006 in Real Detrot Weekly called The Loop. This launch is only the beta version meaning there is more goodies to come.

The general idea of The Loop Detroit is a bit more focused then Renaissance Soul Detroit. The content of this site will try to be more balanced between the hip-hop and electronic music scenes, even touching on the rock music side at times. The main concepts from Renaissance Soul will not be lost though. We will still continue to live on the legacy of our great hip-hop scene, especially that of the late J. Dilla, but now would like to include the other parts.

The beta version of the site will include features with Detroit artists and non-Detroiters talking about, you guessed it, Detroit! With that idea in mind, there is also the regular Top 5 Cosign column that will pose the question to artists their top five things from Detroit any time, any genre, any era. Also, there is the Music section that will have streaming and downloadable audio from the newest music produced from Detroit. There is also a mobile version set up for easy viewing on your smart phones.

The final version of the site that will slowly build up this summer and will include additional sections along with tweeks to the design. Looks for a interviews/stories on the specific classic Dilla productions along with a mix/podcasts series. Alot of other treats to come. Don’t look for us to post daily like a blog because this is not a blog. There is a doing more with less idea going on meaning that while I might not post a ton of article like many blogs these days, most of the content me be created for this site so the impact will be greater.

Thank you to everyone for all the support for the past 9+ years and I hope everyone likes The Loop Detroit.

(source: press release) Paxahau announced today Ricardo Villalobos will be performing in Detroit for the Movement Electronic Music Festival Powered by Ford Fiesta; the addition of a 5th stage sponsored by Movement Torino; and 32 more acts who will perform in Hart Plaza May 29-31 including Ghostland Observatory, Derrick May, Booka Shade, and Marco Carola.

Villalobos, a world-renowned microhouse and minimal techno DJ/producer, last performed in Detroit in 2002 when he played live at Paxahau Electronic Music Festival (PEMF), a four-day party that was held at the now closed Panacea Nightclub in downtown Detroit.

“Ricardo is looking forward to coming back to Detroit again after all these years,” said his Agent Goetz Guse of Cocoon Agency out of Frankfurt, Germany. “His return to the United States and Detroit for the Movement Electronic Music Festival is exclusive to Paxahau. He isn’t booked to perform at any other venue in the States, and we don’t anticipate he will be this year.”

In addition to Villalobos; the contemporary dance music duo Booka Shade from Berlin has been scheduled for a live performance; along with electro, rock, and funk duo Ghostland Observatory who will also perform live.

“We are feeling very good about how this year’s Movement lineup has come together,” said Jason Huvaere, Executive Director of Movement Electronic Music Festival Powered by Ford Fiesta. “With today’s announcement of Ricardo and the other 31 artists, the response we are getting is extremely positive.”

“We are excited to have Movement Torino as the sponsor of the fifth stage for this year’s festival,” said Huvaere. “Our international partnership when formed last year was historic and has since proved to be mutually beneficial for Movement Torino and Movement Detroit.”

Huvaere went on to say, “Fans will enjoy the great lineup of artists scheduled to perform on the Movement Torino stage, there is a great mix of talent from both Detroit and Italy.”

Headlining the Torino Stage during the three-day festival will be one of Italy’s most influential techno and electronic music DJs Marco Carola, Detroit techno pioneer Derrick May, and very popular Italian DJ Mauro Picotto. Other artists performing on the Movement Torino stage are:

Below is an alphabetical list of artists announced today who will appear either on the vitaminwater, Beatport, Made in Detroit, or Red Bull Music Academy stage.

Movement Torino Sponsors 5th Stage at Detroit’s Movement Electronic Music Festival
Movement Torino, an electronic music festival in Italy that Paxahau formed a new partnership with in 2009, will be the sponsor of the fifth stage for the Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit May 29-31. Last year the Movement Festival in Detroit had four stages.

With today’s announcement, there are currently 97 acts that will be performing during the three-day festival. Visit www.movement.us for a complete line-up.

eLZhi – The Leftovers Unmixedtape

The Leftovers UnMixedtape is exactly what it sounds like: A compilation of one of the game’s most talented Emcee’s unreleased and featured works. Whether it’s a promo joint from a few months back (eLZhi and Black Milk – Deep), a feature from another artist’s project (Danny Brown – Contra feat. eLZhi), or just a rare gem from years past (eLZhi and DJ Dez – Living), these Leftovers would have passed for a fresh cooked meal if you didn’t know better. It’s raw, uncut, unmastered, fresh from the studio and ready for your ears. No DJs, just eLZhi and his comrades, your speakers and you. Without the Leftovers UnMixedtape, most of these songs would never have seen the light of day, so consider this a gift, and come get your grub on!
